Nancy the Springbok Mascot

A year or two ago we were approached by Ditsong Sammy Marks Museum and requested to provide a quotation for the refurbishment of their 40 educational taxidermied birds. These birds are used with schools tours; many of the children have never seen any of the South African birds on display. Materials and refurbishment would have incurred excessive costs for Ditsong, so we decided not to send the quote and instead offered a flat rate of a couple of thousand rand to cover the cost of materials. We are avid bird watchers and thought it was for a good cause.

In the early part of 2014, Ditsong (Military Museum) contacted us via email with the wonderful story below and asked if we could refurbish Nancy to a standard where she was fit to travel and would be repaired sufficiently to withstand a UK inspection for temporary importation and museum display. Nancy needed to be fit for The National Museums Scotland, Edinburgh 100 year commemoration of the start of WWI display. This was a huge challenge. Nancy’s story touched our hearts and we refurbished brave Nancy without charge; it was the least we could do under the circumstances. Our carpenter, Frank Zangle, readily agreed to create a lavish, solid hardwood base also at no charge and Emiac assisted with the shipping.

We specialist cleaned and fumigated Nancy, cleaned and repaired her coat, transplanted hair, gave her a new horn, mended her broken joints, replaced her hooves and gave her a thorough fresh paint job. Nancy was then placed on her new solid wood plinth, crated and shipped directly to The National Museum, Scotland.
